Stories from Mountain Village

Blending the traditional wisdom of the Akha people with creative design, we craft products that are simple yet subtly imbued with the special essence of pure natural materials

About me

I am Sitthichai Doibanchop, an artist from the Akha tribe in Chiang Rai, also known professionally as Akha Akkasin. As a cultural storyteller, I am dedicated to sharing the heritage of my people through my craft.

My work is guided by the principle of “Ordinarily Natural.” From my home in Ban Saen Charoen Mai, I combine traditional Akha knowledge with modern creative techniques. I focus on creating products that are simple, beautiful, and made entirely from natural materials.

My signature piece is the ‘Tang Akha,’ our traditional stool. Using an ancient form, I create them with materials like rattan, bamboo, and cowhide, offering styles such as stretched or woven leather. I use a traditional smoking process, which is essential for giving the stools their distinctive tribal scent and making them exceptionally durable.

I have also developed an innovative technique for weaving cowhide with patterns typically used for rattan. This creates a unique look, enhances durability, and provides flexible seating. Using different leather colors allows me to create interesting designs, showcasing a blend of Akha tradition and modern creativity that I am proud to share with the world.

Best regards,
