Akha Chair Workshop with Teacher Art at Sangkhadee Space, Chiang Mai

A handcrafted wooden seat that reflects both functionality and the deep-rooted heritage of the Akha community.

On July 12, 2025, Sangkhadee Space in Chiang Mai hosted a unique cultural workshop led by Teacher Art, a craftsman dedicated to preserving and sharing the traditional knowledge of the Akha people. The focus of the event was the Akha Chair—a handcrafted wooden seat that reflects both functionality and the deep-rooted heritage of the Akha community.

Reviving Tradition through Craft

The Akha Chair is more than just a piece of furniture. Traditionally, it is a symbol of everyday life, resilience, and the close connection between the Akha people and nature. Made with simple tools and local materials, the chair embodies sustainable living and practical design that has been passed down through generations.

Teacher Art guided participants step by step—from selecting the right wood, cutting and shaping the pieces, to assembling the chair with traditional techniques. Each stage of the process highlighted the balance between strength, simplicity, and cultural symbolism.

A Hands-On Cultural Experience

The workshop attracted participants from diverse backgrounds, including local artisans, design students, cultural enthusiasts, and travelers eager to experience Chiang Mai beyond its well-trodden tourist paths. More than just learning woodworking skills, participants engaged in storytelling, cultural exchange, and hands-on practice that fostered a deeper appreciation for indigenous wisdom.

As sawdust filled the air and hands worked carefully on every piece of wood, the workshop became an intimate space where tradition met creativity. Many participants left not only with a handmade chair but also with a sense of connection to the Akha way of life.
